Why I'm Afraid To Make Money Blogging

There's just something about blogging that I love so much - taking pictures, editing, writing, and being creative. It's fun to talk about whatever the hell I want, and to talk to others who enjoy the same hobbies as well! Gah I just love meeting new people.

I see so many youtubers +bloggers doing sponsored posts or having advertisements on their page, and I actually applaud them. It must be difficult to stay grounded when it's easy to get sucked into all of the freebies. Now I see that's why my favorite bloggers or youtubers are the ones that let their honest opinion shine through, and they genuinely care about their content. It's very refreshing to see people blog or make youtube videos because they want to, and not because it's a job.

Of course, for many people this is their job, and that's completely fine - like I said, school isn't cheap, and bills need to be paid  (and copious amounts of dark chocolate). It's all about keeping integrity and being yourself, I think that is the most important. And that my friends, is what I am afraid of ---- blogging because I have to since this company sent me this product, because I want more page views, etc.

Maybe I will have an ad in my sidebar I'll do some sponsored posts in the future, but I want to have the same mindset I did junior year of high school. I'm not going to lie - 75% of the reason why I created Petite Pastels was entirely for myself and for fun! I might the only one who feels this way but let me know if you do too.

Love always,

How I Clean My Makeup Brushes

Here it is, the dreaded but much needed task of washing makeup brushes. Supposedly, brushes are meant to be washed every couple of weeks, but that task is often pushed aside. I've cleaned my brushes a couple of different ways, but I find this to be the easiest (and fastest) method to get the job done!

First, I use Johnson's Baby Shampoo, and put a quarter sized drop into the palm of my hand. Taking my makeup brush, I run it under lukewarm water (making sure to only get water on the bristles) and swirl it into the baby shampoo. Next, rinse the brush, and repeat using the shampoo until the water runs clear! I wash all of my dense brushes first, like foundation and powder brushes, and then the smallest ones last.

To dry them, I make sure the brushes are elevated and pointed downward so the water drains out of the brush and doesn't loosen the glue and the brushes don't shed. Usually, it only takes overnight for them to dry completely, and they always keep their shape which is important!

As you can see, most of the brushes I use are from Real Techniques because they're AMAZING and affordable! What are your favorite makeup brushes?

Life Is A Good Book

"I think of life as a good book. The further you get into it, the more it makes sense," - Harold Kushner
As mentioned in my Project 10 Pan post, here's the second project I hope to complete by next year. This one will be very hard to do, but it'll still be fun (I think) . For the inner nerd in me, my goal this year is to read 50 books. I was inspired by Goodreads.com, where I like to read reviews of books after I have finished them. So far, I've read three books,  and I'm currently reading one for my writing class which I actually like!

I used to read ALL the time when I was younger, and I haven't been as much in the past couple of years. Not only is it important and good for you, but it's so relaxing and can immediately make you forget any of the stresses of everyday life.  Here are two books I've read to far:

Ashes to Ashes by Jenny Han and Siobhan Vivian
This is the last book in a trilogy all about getting revenge on people's mistakes. I'm someone who has to finish a book series once started, and although I read it fairly quickly, the ending didn't do it for me. I would still however recommend this series because the first two books were much better in my opinion! 3/5
To All the Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han
This was a New York Times bestseller, and one of my friends was raving about this book. It's your typical teen romance novel, and it was a pretty good read with a couple annoyences with the main character that can be forgotten about. The couple in the novel are pretty adorable together, but there's a definite cliffhanger in the end - I'll be waiting until June for the next book. 4/5
Both of these I read over winter break were by the same author, but that's just because Jenny Han is a writer I like to read when I want something fast but enjoyable - nothing that requires too much thinking. Hopefully, I will be able to read 48 books by the end of they year, but I'll guess we will see if the inner nerd and me can accomplish it.

Join in on the reading goal HERE!! Also, let me know of any book recommendations :)

The time is always right to do what is right

I thought a perfect way to spend quiet time on a day off from school would be to reflect on what this day means to me. It always astounds me that someone like Martin Luther King Jr. was so inspiring decades ago, but continues to be just as inspiring to new generations for years to come. Everything he believed was for the greater good, and the only word I can express that Dr. King describes is love

I know there are some controversies surrounding his life, but to me, the most important aspect is how powerful his words remain today. Love is what he believed in, preaching the Gospel, and incorporating that into his speeches and inspiration for others (how AMAZING is that?) . Even if you are not religious, everyone can be connected through the same ideal that non violence is the way to go, because it's free of hate. I absolutely will always believe in that.

So every year, today is just another spark to keep doing good. One of my favorite quotes from Dr. King (besides the one as the title), is "Life's most persistent question is, "What are you doing for others?"". I think it's so important to keep that ideal and use it in everyday life - not just for today. Love yourself. Love your friends and family. Love others. Love your enemies. Also, if you're interested check out Galatians 3:28, I really appreciate it for today.

All my love (and then some),
Ps. I just saw the movie Selma, and I HIGHLY recommend it to everyone.

NOTD: Golden Berry

I don't think I've ever talked about this nail polish on the blog before, but I posted an instagram picture of me wearing it because I'm OBSESSED. I wear this all the time, no matter what time of year. This OPI polish in Manicurist of Seville barely needs two coats, and it's the perfect dark berry shade! On top, I have Time to Shine by Sally Hansen (another holy grail but discontinued :/ ), as a subtle accent nail. I definitely need to get a dark lip color like the OPI color very soon!

What's the go-to nail polish you can't live without?

College Journal #4

Well hey, I'm halfway through freshman year of college, and it isn't so bad. This week is the first week back from a whole month of winter break, and I'm so happy to be back! It's a weird feeling to miss school, where my whole life I wasn't the biggest fan. I think it's mainly because I had to wake up super early, and I'm the worst morning person that's ever existed. Trust me, I think I only start to talk in the morning once it hits 9am.

The main thing I was looking forward to was having completely new classes. First semester, I had chemistry, pre-calc, accounting, and social equality. They felt like "general" classes, and now this semester I'm taking advertising, communications, writing, and physics - completely new topics that (except for physics) I have no prior experience with. One thing people always ask me is about my major, and well, that's a whole other post I'll be writing about soon because just thinking about makes me want to crawl into a hole. A 100-foot deep hole.

I can't wait to meet even MORE people and to join a club. Oh, and did I mention I'm taking a self defense class for credit? Yeah, that'll be interesting. I'll be sure to update you all even more (if you care).

10 Products I Want To Use Up

I thought the perfect post for the beginning of the year would be one of two annual projects that I'm hoping to complete. I've never been good at resolutions, but this first task shouldn't be too bad. Since the 6th grade when I received my first eyeshadow as a birthday gift from a friend, I have been slowly but surely collecting products. Most of these things are gifts, or bought on sale. I'm such a sucker for sales.
I've seen many other people do Project 10 Pan, where you chose ten products to use up completely before buying any new ones. This will be good because I'll be saving money while decluttering my room at the same time. I just hate the feeling of wasting money on things I don't finish, and this is perfect for that! (Oh and my mom has been bothering me about it for AGES)
Here are 10 products that have been in my collection for way too long:

1. Coconut Passionfruit BB&W Lotion / I've had this forever, and it's probably past its due date...
2. Avon Eye Makeup Remover Lotion / Eh this is an okay product. I have two of these that I bought for a $1, so I definitely need to get rid of one of them.
3. John Frieda Secret Weapon Smoothing Cream / I never really like to spend a lot of time getting ready, and even though I like this, I'm usually too lazy to use it after blowdrying my hair.
4. The Body Show Almond Nail and Hand Cream / This smells weirdly good for an almond scent, and I always seem to forget to put lotion on.

5. Two Faced Shadow Insurance / You don't want to know how long I've had this.
6. Urban Decay Complexion Primer Potion / I find it does an okay job of keeping my face makeup on longer, but it does nothing amazing.
7. Lancome Eyeshadow - Up Till Dawn / I'm absolutely in love with the color, but I still have it since I left at home when I left for college and haven't touched it since.
8. MAC Cream Blush - Ladyblush / This was my first MAC purchase ever, but I find cream blush takes longer to apply early in the morning.
9. Clinique All About the Eyes Concealer / I don't think I'll ever find something that'll cover these glorious eye bags, but I guess this helps..sorta
10. Clinique Lipstick - Black Honey / I'm not a huge lip product person, so I will be forcing myself to use this since I really like it!

I'll be (hopefully) updating when I finish almost all of these products, and will be adding more into the mix!

Knitting For The Cool Kids

The older, the wiser, right? I think grandmothers, great aunts, and  have got it going on with all of the knitting and crocheting - and now I see why. I just learned how to knit a couple of months ago, and its strangely therapeutic. I know some people believe that it can be "uncool", but I beg to differ.
Here are a couple of reasons why:
1. I don't feel like I'm wasting time. Instead of just watching television, I'm watching television and knitting at the same time...I'm always working on a new project or gift for someone.

2. They make great gifts! Who doesn't like receiving a homemade gift that took hours to make? It really makes it special.

3. Be a fashion designer. Trying to buy scarf? Is your infinity scarf too big or small? Like I've heard before, if you want something done, you've got to do it yourself.
4. It'll put you into a chill mood. After a long day of classes and homework, there's nothing better than listening to some 8tracks and knitting at the same time.
5. Bond with your buddies. A girl who lives on my floor with me taught me how to knit (shoutout to Elise), and sometimes a friend and I will just chat (gossip?) and knit like a couple of old ladies. Good times, good times.
A really helpful channel--->How to Knit
So far, I only know how to make simple infinity scarves, but it's pretty cool when someone asks me where I bought my scarf from. After being sick all week, I'm glad it's something I can still do while bed ridden!
Are there any little hobbies you think people should learn?

Under the Weather

Today's has been one of those days. I'm feeling some sort of sickness coming on, and I've been on the same couch all day. Thankfully, I never get bored when I am feeling sick because I can 1) read a book, 2) watch youtube, and most importantly 3) write this blog post. While I am doing one, two, or a combination of all three of these things, there is something essential that I just have to have. Music.
It's been awhile since I've posted some current songs I am enjoying, and I am beyond obsessed with ten songs. Seriously, this is why I love music. It can make you feel things that you didn't even know existed.
Augustana - Just Stay Here Tonight
Caribou - Back Home
Family of the Year - Hero
Jimmy Eat World - Hear You Me
Augustana - Remember Me
Jose Gonzalez - Heartbeats
Imagine Dragons - My Fault
Strays Don't Sleep - For Blue Skies
Jose Gonzalez - Stay Alive
Damien Rice - The Blower's Daughter
As always, you can listen to every single song for free! Click HERE for the entire playlist.
